Biography:

Dr. Jennifer Canfield came to Huntingdon College in 2008 and is director of Huntingdon Choirs; founder and director of Huntingdon Harmony, a jazz /show choir; and chair of the Department of Music and Art. Dr. Canfield earned her Bachelor of Music and Master of Science in Education (music emphasis) degrees from Troy University, and her Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from Auburn University.

A National Board Certified Teacher, Dr. Canfield taught kindergarten through college music students in both public and private schools. She served as the choral director/music teacher at St. Paul’s Episcopal School, Mobile, Ala.; Department of Defense Schools in Woodbridge and Upwood, United Kingdom; and Summerville High School, in Summerville, S.C.  In the field of higher education, she taught music and directed choirs at Chattahoochee Valley Community College, Phenix City, Ala.; Auburn University, Ala., and Huntingdon College. She founded and directed the Charleston Southern University “Bel Canto Choir” for women.

She has experience teaching private voice, piano, and organ, as well as other classroom-based music classes. In addition to teaching, Dr. Canfield directed high school musicals, such as “Oklahoma!,” “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Camelot,” “The Music Man,” and “Guys and Dolls.” Her work as a choral and vocal accompanist includes time with Troy State University, Mobile Opera Company, Charleston Southern University, Oklahoma Vocal Arts, Charleston Choral Guild, and Huntingdon College Choirs.

Dr. Canfield has been the featured soprano soloist with ensembles, orchestras, choirs and operas throughout the United States and United Kingdom. She sang the role of Mary for the world premier performance of Paul Spicer’s “Easter Oratorio” during Spoleto Festival, Charleston, S.C. She has sung the soprano solos for “Carmina Burana,” the Dvorak “Te Deum,” and “The Sea Symphony” with the Trianon Music Organization at Snape Maltings, U.K. An accomplished composer and arranger, Dr. Canfield enjoys writing for choirs, especially music for women’s choirs. Her arrangement of the traditional English folk song, “Oh, Dear! (What Can the Matter Be?)”, for SSA voices is published by Alfred. In addition, her works have been featured in concerts, choral festivals, and worship services.

Dr. Canfield is the Alabama Repertoire and Standards Chair for Women’s Choirs for the American Choral Directors Association. She is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, and serves as faculty advisor for the Huntingdon College student chapter of ACDA and Tau Beta Sigma Band Sorority. She is active in her church choir, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Auburn, Ala.
