Van Cliburn Winner Performs for Huntingdon’s Cheek Piano Concert SeriesMontgomery, Ala.—Huntingdon College will present Evgeni
Bozhanov, winner of the
13th International Van Cliburn piano competition, as the guest artist
for the final concert in the
Elizabeth Belcher Cheek Piano Concert Series for the 2010–11 academic
year, Tuesday, April 20,
at 7:30 p.m. in the College’s Ligon Chapel, Flowers Hall. The concert is
free and open to the
public.
About Bozhanov’s performance at the 2009 Van Cliburn competition,
journalist Scott Cantrell
of the Dallas Morning News wrote, “Evgeni Bozhanov ... is the most
compelling musical personality
I’ve heard in the 3-1/2 Cliburns I’ve covered. He can produce more
nuances of tone in a
measure of music than most pianists find in a lifetime, but everything
seems so organic. [...] On
musical grounds, he’s clearly ready for a major career, and he’s got the
makings of a
legend.”
Born in Rousse, Bulgaria, Bozhanov made his orchestral debut with his
hometown orchestra at age
12. Currently pursuing post-graduate studies at the Robert Schumann
Musikhochschule in Duesseldorf,
Germany, he earned top prizes at the 2008 Casagrande (Terni, Italy),
2006 Carl Bechstein (Ruhr,
Germany), and 2004 Chopin competitions. He has performed in several
major concert halls in Germany
and is planning a tour of Italy.
The Cheek Piano Concert Series has brought some of the world’s
greatest young pianists to
Montgomery for free public performances in Ligon Chapel, thanks to the
generosity of Ben F. Cheek
III and his family in memory of his first wife, Huntingdon alumna
Elizabeth Belcher Cheek.
