Montgomery, Alabama

State Capitol Building

Montgomery, Alabama, is the convergence of history with the future—a blend of Old South charm with New South sizzle. Visitors to Montgomery are awed by the history that surrounds them in this capital city. From the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement, many of the events that shaped American culture happened in and around Montgomery. When the South seceded from the Union states, Montgomery became the capital of the Confederacy and home to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. At the turn of the century, when the Wright Brothers set up a flying school, Montgomery became the school’s winter home. In the 1960s, Montgomerians Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, among others, led the drive for racial equality that would later become known as the Civil Rights Movement.

Today, Montgomery leads the way as the heart of the New South: progressive, vibrant, and culturally alive. On campus, students are minutes away from a variety of cultural and educational attractions, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Montgomery Zoo, Riverwalk Stadium (home of Montgomery Biscuits baseball), the state archives and legislature, ballet and symphony performances, international business centers and offices, the North American site of Hyundai enterprises, and numerous historic landmarks including the nation’s only Civil Rights Memorial and the Rosa Parks Museum.

Montgomery is within easy driving distance of Birmingham (90 miles), Atlanta (170 miles), the Gulf of Mexico (160 miles), and New Orleans (300 miles). The area enjoys a pleasant climate, featuring warm summers and mild winters.
