Lady Hawks Put Four on GSAC Women's Tennis All-Conference Team

LAGRANGE, Ga. - The two-time defending Great South Athletic Conference Tournament Champion Huntingdon women’s tennis team placed four student-athletes on the All-Conference team, as the league announced its postseason awards on Monday.

Seniors Amanda Thomley and Nicole Weldon, sophomore Riley Prescott and freshman Kristin McDaniel were all recognized for their efforts on the court during the 2008 season. McDaniel, the 2008 GSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

Thomley, who has earned All-Conference accolades in three of her four seasons at Huntingdon, currently sports a 7-7 singles mark, playing at either the No. 1 or No. 2 position. Thomley has also teamed with fellow senior Katie West at the top doubles position, with the duo recording a 7-8 mark. The Dothan, Ala., native was a perfect 5-0 in singles and doubles matches in league play.

Weldon, an Enterprise, Ala., native, is one of two Lady Hawks with 10 wins in singles play this season. Weldon has played at the top five positions during the season and has recorded a 10-5 record thus far. She has also participated in 12 doubles matches, posting a 7-5 record.

The 2007 Freshman of the Year in the league, Prescott played all nine of her singles matches at the No. 1 position, responding with a 5-4 record. A native of Columbus, Ga., Prescott has also posted an 8-3 record in doubles, playing mainly with McDaniel at the No. 2 position.

In her first season with the Lady Hawks, McDaniel made an impact in both singles and doubles play. The Huntsville, Ala., native, has posted a 7-6 singles record, while playing at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. In doubles, she has a 7-5 overall record, including a 7-3 mark with Prescott at the No. 2 spot. McDaniel sports a perfect 5-0 singles record in league play, while also recording a flawless doubles record in GSAC matches.

Individual award winners included Agnes Scott’s Esther Kaplan as Player of the Year, Morgan Douglas of Maryville as Freshman of the Year and Scotties head coach Glen Hill as Coach of the Year.

In addition to its on-court awards, the GSAC also recognized its All-Academic Team on Monday. Huntingdon placed a league-leading seven members on the team. Garnering the honors were Thomley, Weldon, West and fellow senior Brandy Milstead, as well as sophomores Prescott, Hannah Lee Dickinson and Alex Dyer. In order to be considered for the all-academic team, a player must be classified as a sophomore or higher and maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or better.

The Lady Hawks (12-6) will advance to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Tournament for the second consecutive season, as a result of winning the GSAC Tournament. Huntingdon will learn its opponent and match location on Tuesday, April 29.
