Lady Hawks Knock Off Maryville for First Time in 13 Tries with 68-62 Win
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Trailing by one with 2:07 remaining in the contest, the Huntingdon women’s basketball team outscored Maryville 9-2 down the stretch to take a 68-62 victory over the Lady Scots on Saturday afternoon at Roland Arena. The win marked the first time in their NCAA Division III history, a span of 13 games, the Lady Hawks have defeated Maryville on the hardwood.
After a free throw by Natalie Munday, Huntingdon (14-9, 6-4 GSAC) took the lead for good on a trey by Meagan Jackson and Dusti Doss and Lori Bonds combined to go 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 0:40 seconds to preserve the victory.
Doss finished with a game-high 20 points, while Patsy Slater added 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for her 10th career double-double. Paige Huff chipped in 15 points, including three 3-pointers.
Huntingdon converted 23-of-65 shots from the floor, good for 35.4 percent, while holding Maryville to 32.8 percent. The Lady Hawks also forced 22 turnovers, leading to 23 points, while committing only 12 turnovers.
Maryville (12-10, 7-3 GSAC) was paced by Alexis Rouvelas and Alison Harmon with nine points each. Rouvelas, Munday and Katie Saxe each grabbed seven rebounds.
The Lady Hawks led for the entire first half, pushing their lead to as many as 11 points, after a pair of free throws by Tiffany Jordan. The lead proved to be the largest of the game for Huntingdon.
The Lady Hawks will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 21, when they travel to LaGrange, Ga., to take on LaGrange. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. and will be a doubleheader with the men’s squad.
