Lady Hawks Dominate Pensacola Christian In First Ever Meeting

Written By: Caleb Schmidt

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Pensacola Christian scored the first basket of the game, but did not hold the lead much longer as the Huntingdon women’s basketball team scored a season-high 91 points in a 91-48 victory in the first ever meeting between the two school’s on Tuesday evening.

Early in the game the Lady Eagles (2-12) jumped up to a surprising 8-2 lead. However, sophomore Kayla Northingon and Ashton Salter, coming off the bench, provided a spark for the Lady Hawks (4-7) as they responded with a 12-1 run of their own. Once the Lady Hawks took the lead they never looked back.

The Lady Eagles, in their first year of existence, struggled all night with the defensive pressure from the Lady Hawks as they were forced into 42 turnovers. In the first half alone the Lady Eagles committed more turnovers, 27, than they scored points, 24. The Lady Hawks converted those 27 turnovers into 26 points compared to only six points off turnovers for PCC.

Huntingdon was very balanced in scoring as all 13 players recording a field goal. Junior guard Lori Bonds led the barrage with 15 points while Northington added 13 points. Freshmen Kim Jenkins, Christine Hay and Whitney Toole all established season highs in points with nine points, seven points, and five points respectively.

The Lady Hawks dominated the paint outscoring Pensacola 56-18, recorded a season-high 25 steals, and brought down 57 rebounds. They also managed to hold the Lady Eagles to a paltry 25 percent from the field while shooting a season-high 45 percent from the field themselves.

Jackie Bechtel paced the Lady Eagles with 13 points while Ana Moala scored 12. No other Lady Eagle scored more than five points.

The Lady Hawks return to action this Thursday as they head to Spelman for their third Great South Atlantic Conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
