Huntingdon’s Duke Captures Phil Mickelson Award for Nation’s Freshman of the Year; Earns PING First-Team All-America Honors

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Huntingdon freshman Mack Duke has been named recipient of the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men’s golf. Following his tie for fourth at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, Duke also garnered PING First-Team All-America honors.

Duke becomes the second consecutive member of the Huntingdon men’s golf team to earn the Phil Mickelson Award, after Chase Rogers took home the honor last season.

Duke joined the Hawks after prepping at Proctor Academy in New Hampshire. In his first season, he averaged a team-best 73.42 strokes per round, with 22 of his 24 rounds counting toward the team score. He also finished in the top-10 eight times and in the top-25 in all 11 events.

Duke helped the Hawks to seven team titles during the 2008-09 season. Individually, he won the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational and was runner-up at the Greensboro College Invitational, Wynlakes Wynter Nationals and Sunshine Invitational.

Joining Duke on the national All-Freshman Team was Trinity’s (Conn.) Alex Berningham, Franklin and Marshall’s Dan Liebowitz, DePauw’s Ronnie Harris, Chris Reck of Wartburg and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps’ Tain Lee.

The Phil Mickelson Award is presented annually to the most outstanding freshman golfer in NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA.

Also earning All-America honors were Rizal Amin, Mitch Fedorka and Andrew Kramer of La Verne; Illinois Wesleyan’s Bennett Blakeman; Matt Bova, Jake Pleczkowski and Josh Schrader of Methodist; Skidmore’s Chris DeJohn; UT-Tyler’s Brian Jennings; Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; Oglethorpe’s Olafur Loftsson; and Jeff Nieman of Ohio Wesleyan.
