Rudolph Named Player of the Year, Hibbert Freshman of the Year As GSAC Announces Men's Tennis Postseason Awards
LAGRANGE, Ga. - Huntingdon senior Glenn Rudolph was named the Great South Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and newcomer Jonathan Hibbert earned Freshman of the Year honors to highlight six members of the men’s tennis team recognized by the conference on its postseason awards list.
In addition to being honored at the league’s top player, Rudolph was named to the all-conference team for the third consecutive season. He was joined by sophomore B.J. Foroughian and freshman Sean Jackson. Hibbert, Jackson and Sean Buysman were also named to the All-Freshman Team.
Rudolph anchored the Hawks line-up, posting a 6-2 singles record, playing primarily at the top spot. Rudolph also dominated doubles play, recording a 9-3 record, playing exclusively at the No. 1 position. The Muscle Shoals native finished with an unblemished record in league play, recording two singles and two doubles victories.
Hibbert, a local product who prepped at Trinity Presbyterian High School, was a mainstay in the Hawks line-up as a freshman. In doubles play, he finished with a 4-4 record, playing all eight matches at the No. 2 position. In singles play, he recorded a 5-5 record, mainly at the No. 3 spot. He also clinched the GSAC Tournament title for the Hawks with a straight-set victory in his singles match against Maryville.
Foroughian, the league’s Freshman of the Year last season, enjoyed a standout sophomore campaign. The native of Baton Rouge, La, finished with just a 3-6 singles record, despite playing at the top two spots, while also finishing 7-6 at the top doubles position.
Jackson, a native of Hudsonville, Mich., proved to be a versatile player for the Hawks in his first season. Seeing action at four singles positions and all three doubles spots, Jackson recorded a 7-4 record in both singles and doubles. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the GSAC Men’s Tennis Tournament, as he rallied in both his singles and doubles match in the finals to give Huntingdon its second consecutive title.
Buysman also enjoyed a stellar fist season with Huntingdon. The Suwanee, Ga., native, finished a perfect 4-0 in doubles matches, while posting a 4-4 mark in singles matches.
The Hawks finished their 2009 season with a 9-6 overall record and their second straight league tournament title.
