Foroughian Named Freshman of the Year, Lane Takes Home Top Coach Honors as GSAC Announces Postseason Awards

LAGRANGE, Ga. - Freshman B.J. Foroughian was named the Great South Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and head coach and Huntingdon Hall-of-Famer Charlie Lane earned Coach of the Year honors to lead eight members of the men’s tennis team recognized by the conference on its postseason awards list.

Earning All-GSAC honors were senior Brady Lamborne, junior Glenn Rudolph, and freshmen Graham Neely, Zach Molin and Foroughian. The freshmen trio was also named to the All-Freshmen Team.

In his first season with the Hawks, Foroughian recorded an 8-7 singles record and a 10-4 mark in doubles, playing primarily at the No. 1 spot in each. The Baton Rouge, La, native, finished 5-5 in singles matches at the No. 1 position, while posting 2-2 mark while playing at the No. 3. He also won his lone match playing in the fourth spot and tallied a 2-1 singles mark in league play. He teamed with Rudolph to form a tough duo at the top doubles position, going 8-2 in their last 10 matches and winning their last four.

Lamborne, a two-year member of the Huntingdon tennis program, finished his final season with a 6-5 overall singles record and a perfect 2-0 mark in doubles play. Lamborne, who is from Alexander City, Ala, finished 6-2 while playing at the No. 4 singles position and has won his last four matches. Teaming with fellow senior Frank Mitchell in doubles, the duo won a match both at the top and third doubles position this season.

Rudolph, the 2008 GSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, had arguably his best collegiate season, going 14-2 in singles matches and teaming with Foroughian for a 10-4 doubles mark. A winner in his last 12 singles matches, Rudolph is undefeated while playing at the No. 2 singles position, sporting an 11-0 record. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Rudolph also posted an undefeated singles record in league play.

Neely, a local product who attended Trinity High School, finished his first season with Huntingdon 10-3 in singles play and 10-4 in doubles action. Neely posted a 7-2 record at the No. 5 position and a 3-1 mark at the No. 6 position, winning his last six singles matches. In doubles, Neely won matches with three different partners, mainly playing No. 3 doubles with junior Dalton Allen. The duo earned an 8-4 record in matches at the third spot.

Molin also contributed to the success of the team in singles and doubles. The native of Greenville, Miss., posted a 5-4 singles mark, including a perfect 4-0 while playing at the No. 5 position. Molin teamed with sophomore Kent Hagan to record a 7-4 doubles record, playing entirely at the No. 2 position. He finished the doubles portion of the year with an 8-4 overall mark.

Lane, who was inducted into the Huntingdon Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998, is in his second season with the Hawks. In 2008, he led the team to a 14-2 overall record and the Great South Athletic Conference Regular-Season and Tournament Championships. Huntingdon has currently won 12 consecutive matches and finished a perfect 7-0 against members of the GSAC. Lane sports a 22-10 overall record in his two seasons.

Rudolph, Hagan and senior Jeremy Driver were also named to the league All-Academic team. Piedmont was the only member of the league to put more on the All-Academic team than the Hawks, finishing with five on the team. In order to be considered for the all-academic team, a player must be classified as a sophomore or higher and maintain a grade point average of 3.25 or better.

Piedmont’s David Gillespie earned Player of the Year honors to complete the individual awards.

Following its GSAC Tournament victory on Sunday, Huntingdon will now wait to see if it will have an opportunity to participate in the NCAA Division III Tennis Tournament. The NCAA will announce its postseason participants on Tuesday, April 29.
