Schuran and Shannon Earn GSAC All-Conference Accolades for Third Consecutive Season

LAGRANGE, Ga. - For the third consecutive season, Huntingdon senior Kayla Schuran and junior Clare Shannon were named to the All-Great South Athletic Conference team, the league announced this weekend.

In her third season with the Lady Hawks, Schuran finished with 229 kills, while adding 96 digs and 74 total blocks. She also added 31 service aces, while playing in a team-leading 106 sets.

During her career, Schuran posted 696 kills, 370 digs, and more than 300 total blocks. The Middleburg, Fla., native also recorded 93 service aces.

Also completing her third season with the program, Shannon anchored the Lady Hawks’ offensive attack, posting a team-leading 263 kills in 2009. She also added 213 digs, a mark which ranked third on the team, while leading the squad with 68 service aces. The Birmingham native also finished with 26 total blocks, including five solos.

In addition to its individual awards, the GSAC also announced its All-Academic team, on which the Lady Hawks tied for a league high with six members. Huntingdon was represented by senior Carrie Cabaniss, Shannon and fellow juniors Jessica Sharker and Christine Whiten, and sophomores Alyssa Eason and Abby Carter.

To be recognized by the GSAC as an All-Academic team member, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better and be a sophomore or higher in classification.

Maryville’s Lindsy Little was named the Player of the Year, for the second straight year. This season, she was second in the GSAC with 275 kills, was also fifth in hitting percentage and 10th in digs.

Middle hitter Hannah Akers of Maryville was voted Freshman of the Year, after finishing fourth on the Lady Scots with 135 kills.

Jennifer Granlund of Piedmont was chosen Libero of the Year, as she led the Lady Lions and the GSAC with 438 digs.

For the second straight season, Maryville’s Kandis Schram of Maryille College was selected Coach of the Year, marking the eighth time during her career she has earned the honor. She led the Lady Scots to a 26-5 regular season record and their second straight GSAC regular season championship. The Scots also won the GSAC Tournament and earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III postseason.

Huntingdon finished the 2009 campaign 18-13 overall. The 18 victories are the most by Huntingdon under the direction of fourth-year head coach Megan Aiello.
