Huntingdon’s Katie Scott Ranked in Final ITA Atlantic South Singles Rankings
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Following her impressive showing at the Wilson/ITA South Region Championships last month, Huntingdon freshman women’s tennis player Katie Scott was ranked as the region’s 24th best singles player, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced in its final fall rankings.
The ranking by Scott marked the second time a member of the Lady Hawks team has been ranked in the single portion of the Atlantic South rankings. Former Huntingdon standout Brandy Milstead was ranked 34th in the 2007 fall rankings.
“For a player to be ranked regionally after competing just once at the collegiate level is something that Katie can be very proud of,” head coach Ximena Moore said. “She has unlimited potential and we will rely on her to continue her strong play this spring.”
In her lone collegiate appearance, Scott, who is from Panama City, Fla., won a pair of singles matches in the main draw of the tournament, before being defeated by No. 4 overall seed, Lindsay Reidenbach of Emory.
Scott opened the tournament with a straight-set victory over Millsaps’ Ashley Rivera, 6-1, 6-1. She followed with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Meredith Mayfield of Centre. In the contest against Reidenback, Scott rallied from a 4-0 first-set deficit to even the score at 4-4, before eventually falling, 6-4, 6-2.
Emory was selected as the top team in the Atlantic South region, while Laura Chen of Carnegie Mellon was selected the top single player. The Tartans’ duo of Chen and Ashley Herrick were selected as the top doubles tandem.
Huntingdon will open its 2010 season on Sunday, February 21, when it travels to Atlanta to take on Methodist and Emory.
