MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Huntingdon College Director of Athletics
Buzz Phillips will return to the bench as head coach of the women’s
basketball program for the 2010–11 season, the College announced on
Thursday.
“As an athletic director, Coach Phillips is a superb example for all
of our coaches,” Huntingdon President J. Cameron West said. “Coach
Phillips has served as our head women's basketball coach in the
past—the players loved working with him, he loved the challenge, and
the team had successful seasons. I deeply appreciate his willingness to
take on the role of coach in addition to his athletic director
responsibilities. I know the women's basketball program will be in good
hands with Coach Phillips, as are all of our athletic programs under
his leadership."
Phillips spent four seasons, two as head coach and two as interim
head coach, at the helm of the Lady Hawks’ program from 2005–09.
“I am excited about being offered a chance to return to the bench as
head coach,” Phillips said. “I thought long and hard about this program
and after discussions with the Huntingdon administration, I thought that
stepping in might provide a familiar face during this transition.”
In his four seasons, Phillips helped the Lady Hawks to a 49-44
overall record. Following the 2008–09 season, he was named Great South
Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and helped Huntingdon to the GSAC
Tournament Championship Game. During the 2007–08 campaign, the Lady
Hawks were among the most improved teams in all of Division III, as they
improved 6.5 victories from the season prior.
Under his leadership, Huntingdon had six All-Conference performers,
while 18 student-athletes were named to the GSAC’s All-Academic squad.
He also helped Tiffany Jordan earn Player of the Year honors and Lori
Bonds earn the league’s Freshman of the Year award.
“I am very appreciative of the confidence that the administration has
shown in me,” Phillips added. “I am looking forward to getting things
started.”
