Piedmont Volleyball Defeats Huntingdon in GSAC Championship Match


The Piedmont College volleyball team brought home the Great South Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon as it defeated Huntingdon College in the title match. The Lions upped their overall record to 20-13 following a 3-1 decision (26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) over the Hawks, and in the process earned the league’s automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Tournament that starts next weekend.

Both team’s offenses found it tough going throughout the match with Piedmont outhitting Huntingdon, .062 (38-27—177) to .015 (50-47—200). Huntingdon finished with a 96-84 advantage in digs but saw Piedmont post 16 total blocks to its nine.

Senior Kalin DeMarris paced the Piedmont offensive with 11 kills. A trio of Lions totaled six terminations, Heather Stafford, Ashley Fannon, and Eris Kruse. Sophomore Paige Stafford, who was named MVP of the Championships provided outstanding defensive play for Piedmont and chalked up a match-high 27 digs. Sophomore Hallye Jerkins and junior Rachel Powell each compiled eight total blocks (1-7).

Huntingdon, which ended its year with an overall slate of 17-19, was led by freshman Kelly Kahumoku and freshman Abby Brown with 13 terminations apiece. Alyssa Eason and Clare Shannon each came through with 22 digs.
