MOUNTAIN, Ga. ---- The Huntingdon College women’s basketball team
picked up its third win of the season, 54-48, against Covenant
College on Saturday afternoon in Georgia. The Lady Hawks overcame a
13 point deficit in the second half, with a 17-0 run late in the
contest.
After
leading 19-16 at the half, Covenant opened up the second period with
a 10-0 run to give the Lady Scots it's largest lead of 13 points
(29-16). Trailing by eight points, the Lady Hawks topped Covenant's
10-point streak with a 17-0 run, to gain the lead, 42-34, with 5:52
left in the game.
With
under three minutes left in the game, the teams exchanged leads four
times before Huntingdon captured the win. Jodi Montalvo converted
both free throws with 1:04 in the game to put the Lady Hawks up 49-48
for the final lead exchange.
After
the Lady Hawks went up 50-48, Covenant's Jessie Blankenship missed a
pair of potential game-tying free throws with :11 seconds left in the
game. The Lady Hawks secured the victory when Ashton Salter converted
4-of-4 free throws in two trips to the line, with under ten seconds
left in the game.
Huntingdon
scored 25 points off of Lady Scots' turnovers, to Covenant's 15
points in the game.
Senior
Ashton Salter led the team with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and one block.
LaTerial Williams added 9 points, five assists and four steals,
followed by Jodi Montalvo's 9 points and 9 rebound performance.
For
the game, Huntingdon held a 45-38 advantage on the glass. The Lady
Scots converted 31.0 percent of its shots, hitting 13-of-42, while
the Lady Hawks finished 17-of-55 (30.9 percent).
Covenant
(0-6, GSAC 0-2) was led by Jessie Blankenship with 13 points and 12
rebounds, followed by Margaret Cross' 13 points in the loss.
The
Lady Hawks' (3-1, GSAC 2-0) next game is against cross-town rival
Faulkner University (9-1) on Thursday, Dec. 16, at Faulkner's campus.
Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
