MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Huntingdon College’s second-ranked men’s golf team finished day one of the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals with a 5-stroke lead. Seniors Chase Blaich and J.P. Kircher each finished in the top-5 of the 59-man field.
“Today was tough with the windy conditions, I’m glad we’re in the lead but we could’ve scored better,” said head coach Matt Mahanic on the Hawks opening round performance.
Huntingdon finished day one with a first place 310 performance, followed by Methodist University and Oglethorpe University with a 315 and 318, respectively. Oglethorpe’s Eric Quinn led the field of 59 players with a 3-over par, 75.
Blaich paced the Hawks with a 4-over par, 76, finishing tied for second, while Kircher recorded a 5-over par, 77, tied for fourth place.
Freshmen Cates Culpepper and Jamey Lester posted top-15 finishes on day one, with Culpepper tied for 7th (6-over par, 78) and Lester tied at 13th (7-over par, 79). Freshman Rodes Bowers rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a 10-over par, 82, tied for 29th place.
Huntingdon had three individuals take the course today, including freshmen Matt Stinebaugh, Tyler Chavira and Griffin Just. Stinebaugh led the three with a 9-over par, 81, followed by Chavira’s 12-over, 84, and Just’s 15-over par, 87.
The Hawks look to claim their first victory of the spring on Tuesday, Feb. 22, in the final round of the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals. The competition begins teeing off tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. on Wynlakes Golf & Country Club’s course.
