MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- After trailing
10-2 to Emory University, the Huntingdon College baseball team scored
five runs pulling within three. However, the Hawks' offense missed
opportunities for more runs leaving nine total runners on base in
the, 10-7, loss at Posey Field. Boxscore
Senior Miles Walding and sophomore
Keegan Lambeth each led the Hawks (10-4) with two hits on the night,
while freshman Joseph Odom's homer gave him a team-high two RBI's in
the loss. The Eagles out-hit the Hawks 12-9, while Huntingdon struck
out eight times compared to Emory's two.
Freshman Joseph Fincher (2-1) made his
third start of the season against the Eagles giving up six runs on
six hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Emory (8-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead
after two runs in the second and four more in the top of the 3rd
inning on Wednesday evening at Posey Field.
In the bottom of the 3rd
inning, junior Chad Baxley's bunt for a single and stolen base set up
senior Miles Walding's RBI double down the left field line, scoring
Baxley from second base. Walding stole third base before senior Drew
Harrell reached on base from a Kevin O'Connor fielding error at
second base. O'Connor's mistake advanced Walding across the plate
cutting the margin to four runs, 6-2. Unfortunately, Huntingdon's
offense left three runners on base ending the inning.
The Eagles extended their lead to eight
runs, 10-2, after scoring three runs in the 4th and one in
the 5th inning, including O'Connor's two-run homer in the
top of the 4th against freshman Tate Fowler.
Huntingdon's sophomore Caleb Astin led
off the bottom of the 6th inning with a double to right
field followed by Odom's third home run of the season driving in
Astin, 10-4.
In the bottom of the 7th
inning, Huntingdon's mental mistakes ended the rally after scoring
two-runs, 10-6. With bases loaded and two outs, a Hawks' runner was
caught in a run down between first and second base before Emory's
Ryan Jones threw sophomore Austin White out at home.
Lambeth's triple to right field drove
in the Hawks final run of the night, 10-7, in the bottom of the 8th
inning, after senior Stephen Bishop doubled to center field.
Emory's Paul Schwendel picked up the
win after pitching 6 innings while allowing four runs on five hits.
Schwendel walked four and struck out four batters on the night. Jason
Edwards and Mike Bitanga each struck out two batters in their relief
duties for Emory. Bitanga recorded a save after 1 2/3 scoreless
innings on the mound.
Huntingdon looks to rebound on
