MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Huntingdon College’s women’s tennis team defeated Covenant College’s women’s team, 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon, while Covenant’s men’s team edged out the Hawks, 5-4, on Huntingdon’s tennis courts.
The Lady Hawks’ victory marks head coach Ximena Moore’s 99th victory in nine seasons at Huntingdon. Covenant jumped out to a 2-1 lead after claiming two of the three doubles matches. After losing the No. 6 singles contest, Huntingdon won the final five matches to defeat the Lady Scots by three points, 6-3.
Huntingdon’s men’s team found themselves in the same situation as the Lady Hawks down 2-1 after doubles. However, the Hawks kept fighting and went into the No. 6 singles competition tied 4-4. Covenant’s Johnny Herberich held off Huntingdon’s Dylan Carr, 6-4, 6-4, for the deciding point and the Scots third win of the season.
The Hawks (7-7, 2-0 GSAC) return to action on Friday, Apr. 8, hosting Rust College at Huntingdon’s tennis courts beginning at 3 p.m. Huntingdon’s women’s team looks to help coach Moore accomplish her 100th career victory on Saturday, Apr. 9, at home against Judson College starting at 9 a.m. The Lady Hawks (6-6, 3-0 GSAC) will also play GSAC opponent Piedmont College at 2 p.m. on Huntingdon’s tennis courts on Saturday.
