GSAC Golf Tournament: Hawks Five-Strokes Behind Maryville, Lady Hawks Unable to Finish

DEMOREST, Ga. --- Huntingdon College's fifth-ranked men's golf team finished the first round of the inaugural Great South Athletic Conference tournament five-strokes behind current leader Maryville College. Stormy weather kept the Lady Hawks from completing their opening round of the GSAC tournament at the Orchards Golf Course hosted by Piedmont College.

Huntingdon's men's golf team got off to a rocky start in the opening four holes, adding 15 extra-strokes to the team total after recording four double-bogeys, one triple-bogey and one quadruple-bogey. The Hawks' settled down and carded a team total one-under par on the back nine at the Orchards Golf Course on Monday for a team total 302.

Huntingdon's freshman Rodes Bowers paced the team with a one-over par, 73, finishing the first round tied for 3rd place. Seniors Chase Blaich and J.P. Kircher each finished tied for 8th place after shooting four-over par, 76.

Freshmen Cates Culpepper and Jamey Lester rounded out the Hawks' scoring carding a five-over par, 77, and a ten-over par, 82, respectively. Culpepper finished round one in 13th place while Lester is tied for 22nd at the GSAC tournament.

Maryville made the most of the opening round firing a team total 297 for the day one lead. After struggling early in the day, Huntingdon fought back finishing five-strokes behind the Scots in second place with a 302. LaGrange College's Hudson Keener carded an individual-low two-under par, 70, helping the Panthers finish three-strokes behind the Hawks with a 305.

On the women's side, bad weather cut the opening round short at the Orchards Golf Course in Demorest, Georgia. The Lady Hawks and the rest of the field will conclude round one on Tuesday, Apr. 26, beginning at 10 a.m. Eastern prior to the final round.

Huntingdon's men's golf team will try to close in on Maryville for the first-ever GSAC title with the first group teeing off at 10:40 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Apr. 26, at the Orchards Golf Course in Demorest, Georgia.
