GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Huntingdon
College's men's golf team moved up two spots during the final round
of the 2011 NCAA Division III Championship after carding the low
round of the day, 289, finishing in sixth place with a four day total
of 1182, 30-over par.
Nine miles away from their campus, No.
4 Greensboro claimed the 2011 NCAA Division Championship with a four
day total of 1167. No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan University posted a
runner-up finish following a 290 team total on Friday trailing The
Pride by six-strokes. Three school's finished tied for 3rd
place on Friday with a tournament total of 1180, 28-over par,
including No. 2 Saint John's University, No. 3 Methodist University
and No. 17 Texas Lutheran University.
Centre College's Chris Morris captured
the individual title after carding a 14-under par, 274, during the
four day tournament.
“Today's round was a great way to end
our season and this really showed our team's character to finish
strong during the final round,” said Director of Golf Matt Mahanic
on the fact that the Hawks' recorded the tournament low on the
Grandover Resort's East Course on Friday with a 289.
The Hawks completed their seventh
consecutive NCAA Division III Championship on Friday at the Grandover
Resort and Conference Center 15-strokes behind the champion,
Greensboro College. Freshman Jamey Lester helped Huntingdon record
the round low by firing a four-under par, 68, during the final round
on Friday.
Senior Chase Blaich and freshman Cates
Culpepper each received Third Team All-American honors following 22nd
place finishes at the NCAA Division III Championship. Blaich finished
his career at Huntingdon a
two-time All-American while Culpepper capped off his freshman
season with the honor. “These two young men have great work ethic
and it showed in their performance this week finishing in the top-24
to receive the All-American honors,” said Mahanic.
On the final day of the tournament,
Lester registered the Hawks' best round at the championship with a
four-under par, 68, finishing tied for 26th place with a
four day total of 298, 10-over par. Blaich completed his final
collegiate round of golf with an even-par, 72, performance placing
tied for 22nd with a nine-over par, 297. Culpepper also
finished tied for 22nd place after shooting four-over par,
76, on Friday for a nine-over par, 297, total.
In the final round of his Huntingdon
career, senior J.P. Kircher, two-time All-American, carded one-over
par, 73, finishing the tournament tied for 32nd place with
a 12-over par, 300. Freshman Rodes Bowers finished tied for 47th
place following a nine-over par, 81, on Friday bringing his
tournament total to 304, 16-over par. “Rodes (Bowers) performance
in the first three rounds really helped us make the cut this week and
I'm happy how he stepped up during the tournament,” said Mahanic.
The Hawks' graduate two seniors this
season in two-time All-American Blaich and Kircher and they're
departure will be felt, “We're going to miss these guy's big time,”
said Mahanic. “They've set the bench-mark very high for everyone
following them and they brought a lot of heart and character into our
program.”
The seventh-ranked Hawks concluded
their season on Friday with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division
III Championship at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center's East
Course. Next season the Hawks will return three experienced
sophomore's looking to return to the championship, “Even though
we'll still be young next season, these three freshmen have matured
after gaining so much playing experience throughout this year,”
said Mahanic.
