MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Katlyn Reynolds scored two goals
and freshmen Jessica Salinas and Heather Wilson each scored once to lead the
Huntingdon women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win over Judson College on Monday.
The Hawks (1-1) built a 3-0 lead in the first half and were
able to control the tempo for most of the game.
“We worked well together today,” said Reynolds, who finished
with two goals, an assist and four shots on goal. “Jessica, Heather and
Stephanie (Metz) made good passes and Kathleen (Penney) made some good crosses.
We were able to get the ball where we needed it to be.”
Huntingdon head coach Wes Anania said it’s good to see his
younger players stepping forward.
“They’re picking up on what we’re trying to do,” Anania
said. “It’s encouraging to see that happening so quickly.”
Anania said he was pleased with his team’s performance in
the first half. But the second half showed there is still room for improvement.
“We’re still working to get on the same page as a team,”
Anania said. “During the first half, we were on the same page for most of the
45 minutes. That dropped off a little in the second half but we were able to
put one more goal in and solidify the win. The second half gave us more that we
need to work on as we move forward.”
Salinas scored the Hawks’ first goal of the season, a little
more than three minutes into the game. Jaden Rountree had the assist. Salinas
had the assist on the next goal as Reynolds made it 2-0 with 22:15 left in the
first half.
Wilson made it 3-0 on a Reynolds’ assist with 1:36 left in
the first half. Reynolds scored the game’s final goal with 1:10 left in the
second half.
“We’re still working on communicating on the field but we
felt good about our communication today,” Reynolds said. “It’s really important
for us to take advantage of every opportunity to get better. What we do now is
going to set up how we play the rest of the season. We want to keep making
progress as we get into conference play.”
Keeper Jenny Burnash had six saves in the shutout.
Huntingdon returns to action on Saturday. The Hawks host Clearwater
