Disability and the Law

A person with a disability is an individual with a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Huntingdon College is legally bound to prohibit discrimination in the recruitment process, the admission process, and the educational process of otherwise-qualified individuals with disabilities. Students with documented disabilities are entitled to receive approved modifications, appropriate academic adjustments, or auxiliary aids that will enable them to participate in and to have the opportunity to benefit from all educational programs and activities of Huntingdon College. Examples of disabilities include, but are not limited to, hearing disabilities, specific learning disabilities, orthopedic/mobility disabilities, psychological disabilities, speech/language disorders, visual disabilities, and chronic health impairments.

Confidentiality

All documentation is regarded with the strictest confidentiality.

Support Services and Accommodations

Services and accommodations are available to all qualified students with documented disabilities and are individually tailored to each student’s specific needs. Reasonable accommodations are those modifications that will minimize, to the extent practical, the impact of a disability.

Your Responsibilities as a Student with a Disability

In order to request disability-related services at Huntingdon College, you must self-identify to the Disabilities Intake Coordinator and provide appropriate and up-to-date documentation to verify your disability. The documentation should include a diagnosis and a description of the functional limitations that may affect your academic performance. Huntingdon reserves the right to request additional documentation or current testing in order to determine appropriate accommodations. After the accommodations have been approved by the Disability Services Committee, the Disabilities Intake Coordinator will assist you in notifying your professor(s). However, it is up to you to authorize in writing any notification of instructors of your required modifications and strategies. No information will be shared without your permission.

You have the responsibility to meet with instructors at the beginning of each semester to discuss arrangements for approved accommodations in each course. You must maintain the same responsibility for your education as a non-disabled student. This includes maintaining the same academic levels and essential requirements, maintaining appropriate behavior, and giving timely notification of special needs. The cost of the documentation is the responsibility of the student. We hope you will find that the personnel at Huntingdon College have put forth every effort to accommodate your disability-related needs without compromising the quality of your academic experience. If, however, you feel that this is not the case, it is your responsibilty to let us know. If you encounter unnecessary barriers—physical or programmatic—please contact the instructor, the Disabilities Intake Coordinator or the Dean of Students. If at any time you encounter a problem which cannot be resolved informally, the Grievance Procedure in the Student Handbook can serve as an additional resource for you. College personnel may not realize that obstacles exist until they are made aware of them.
