Montgomery, Ala.—Huntingdon College President J. Cameron West announced today that the College will hold a special commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2020, Saturday, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. on the Huntingdon College Green. The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the College’s 2020 Homecoming celebration, which has been rescheduled from a later date in October to October 9–10, according to Huntingdon senior vice president Anthony Leigh.
“Commencement is a defining moment of the college experience and of each student’s life,” said West. “Because of the pandemic, our senior class has not been able to commemorate the final semester of their undergraduate years in keeping with Huntingdon tradition. It is important for the Huntingdon family to honor them and to allow them to walk across Top Stage in their Huntingdon regalia in the presence of their family and friends. Weather and pandemic permitting, our 2020 Commencement Ceremony will become one of the most memorable in the 166-year history of Huntingdon College.”
“The Office of College and Alumni Relations and the Office of Student Affairs are planning special events for Friday night and Saturday, October 9–10, to celebrate the Class of 2020’s graduation, as well as their first Homecoming,” stated Leigh. “Together with Huntingdon alumni from multiple class years—especially those whose class years end in zero or five and who are celebrating reunions of their own—Homecoming 2020 will become a bridge connecting their student and alumni identities as life-long Hawks. We know that all of our alumni who return to campus for Homecoming will enjoy seeing this class receive their special recognition.”
Huntingdon senior class president Jennifer Knox was enthusiastic about the announcement. Paraphrasing the College’s alma mater, which identifies Huntingdon for students and alumni as “the home we love so well,” Knox said, “Let’s make this a ‘Coming Home’ worth writing home about. Our heart-strings have been twisted, pulled and stretched over these past several weeks of uncertainty. We have an opportunity to let God use our very own Hawk heart-strings to play a resilient melody that has never been heard before. [Since] this global pandemic will be written about in history books, I say let’s make Huntingdon’s 2020 graduation ceremony one that future generations will know and love so well.”
On March 19, the College announced the 2020 graduation activities scheduled for May 7–9 were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, contact Anthony Leigh at aleigh@hawks.huntingdon.edu.
