Huntingdon Internship Spotlight – Maggie Schaub ’26

Montgomery, AL – College internships offer students the opportunity to connect their classroom education to application in the workforce. The experience allows the student to see a job from the vantage point of a member of the staff, but still with a focus of learning and engaging. The experience of an internship boosts resume experience, develops real-world skills, offers networking opportunities, and can help a student discern a future calling in a career.

Maggie Schaub, a senior communication studies and religion double major from Montgomery, Alabama was not only a beneficiary of the opportunities her internship had to offer, but it also led her to state-wide recognition for her work.

In 2025, Maggie attended the Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA) conference in Montgomery. While she was networking with other attendees, Maggie met Christie Aitken from the Alabama Department of Conservation National Resources (DCNR). After the conversation and exchange of information, Christie reached out to Maggie to offer her an internship.

At the DCNR – Alabama State Parks – Marketing and Communications Department, Maggie was the intern for the entire team, but with a relatively small staff, she was given opportunities to work on several projects and try her hand at various tasks. She primarily worked on social media management, project management and graphic design. Maggie ran over 50 social media pages interacting with park guests online. She was also able to be involved in campaigns including the Ambassador Program, a promotion to allow guests to be more involved and connected to their favorite parks.

When reflecting on her internship, Maggie commented, “Overall, this experience taught me a lot about how to multitask. We had a small team of people but a lot of work to do. I learned how to build successful campaigns from start to finish, cater our language to our specific audience, and maintain consistent branding. I was surprised to be able to learn as quickly as I did. I did not anticipate being trusted with a lot of tasks in this job as an intern, but I’m very grateful I was because it taught me how to work in high volume and I was surprised and happy to know that I could handle it. I’m grateful to the Alabama State Parks for giving me that chance. I now feel more confident in myself as a future professional going into agency work.”

This spring at the American Advertising Federation Montgomery Awards Gala, Maggie was recognized with the Intern of the Year Award. The awards program described Maggie as “the kind of teammate every organization hopes to find – talented, dependable, and genuinely good to the core. As part of the Alabama State Parks team, Maggie quickly established herself as a steady presence who shows up ready to learn, contribute, and support others. She approaches her work with curiosity and care, tackling each task with thoughtfulness and follow-through well beyond expectations.”

After her internship experience last year and graduation this May, Maggie will be in Montgomery continuing to grow her small business covering freelance opportunities at Maggie Schaub Creative. Her experience managing larger scale projects and accounts has given her more confidence working with organizations and building her success. Her long-term plans include moving back into agency work and being on a creative team with hopes of working for a non-profit organization, possibly a social justice group in need of a social media and creative project manager.
