Huntingdon Introduces Four New Majors

Montgomery, Ala.—Four new majors will join those already on the books for fall 2022 entering students, Huntingdon College senior vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty Dr. Tom Perrin said today. The new academic programs combine elements of the College’s former pre-professional study tracks with major coursework to ensure that students complete the prerequisite classes for graduate or professional school admission as part of their major curriculum. Doing so extends the number of classes necessary to complete the major, but also allows for those classes to be considered integral to the major so that the financial aid for which the student is eligible can be applied to all courses.

New for fall 2022 are:

  • Biochemistry/Pre-Health
  • Cell Biology/Pre-Health
  • Exercise Science/Pre-Athletic Training/Pre-Occupational Therapy
  • Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy

The pre-health designation for science majors includes coursework to prepare for the professional study of dentistry, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and veterinary medicine, among other fields.

“Huntingdon College has established a consistent and strong reputation for preparing students well for professional careers in the health sciences,” said Dr. Perrin. “This year alone at least four upcoming graduates have been admitted to medical schools and five have been admitted to Doctor of Physical Therapy programs. Professional schools in health careers require that students have completed specific courses at the undergraduate level before they can be considered for admission. These new majors are constructed for students who are working toward careers in health and wellness in a targeted way. We have seen interest in our pre-health areas of study grow exponentially during the past five years.”

Huntingdon also added a minor in criminal justice this month. An undergraduate criminal justice major is already offered and has become quite popular since its introduction in 2019, according to Dr. Perrin.

More information about the majors will be available soon on the Huntingdon College website, www.huntingdon.edu.
