WHAT’S NEW?

It’s Week One!

Welcome and welcome back, Hawks! The first week of classes is always filled with a flurry of things to get done in addition to acclimating to classes and your college home. But you’ve got this. Just breathe. This week, make sure you (see instructions for how to do all of these things in your Huntingdon email):

• If you’re a resident student and want to adjust your meal plan from the default 15-meals per week to one of the other plans, do so by 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 12.
• If you want to add flex points to your meal plan, or need a new ID card, etc., same deadline.
• If you need to add/drop classes—particularly if you are in need of a class that is a prerequisite or is required and that you have to take this semester in order to graduate according to your Plan of Study—there are very specific directions for what you need to do. See your email for a message from Registrar Maryann Beck. Deadline is 4:00 p.m. Friday.
• Register your vehicle for parking—go to the Security Office, Wilson Hall. Ticketing will begin next week. (Parking permits are free.)
• Get a library card if you don’t already have one.
• Pick up your books in the Scarlet & Grey Shop (it’s part of the Huntingdon Plan!)
• If you need to request learning accommodations, or if you want to put together a plan for staying on track for your degree, or if you want a little extra advising help, etc.—see the Staton Center for Learning Enrichment in the second floor of Houghton Library.
• And a word of advice: get out of your room! There are so many friends to meet, so many memories to make. Don’t waste a moment!

Huntingdon Joins Collegiate Conference of the South

Huntingdon is a charter member of the new Collegiate Conference of the South and remains affiliated with the USA South Athletic Conference in selected sports. The CCS was formed from a restructure of USA South Athletic Conference, which had previously been the largest NCAA-III conference in the South. The new members align as follows:

Huntingdon and UAB Sign Agreement

Huntingdon College and the University of Alabama-Birmingham have signed an agreement for HC students to apply for early admission to the UAB Accelerated Master of Nursing Pathways Master of Science in Nursing program. The agreement allows students to apply for the AMNP in their junior  year and receive word of admission by the end of the semester, provided all requirements are met. For more information, contact Dr. John Berch, professor of chemistry.

• Golf: Three Huntingdon men’s golfers were named among 140 Division III golfers as 2021-22 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars by the GCAA. Congratulations to GRANT GRONKA, ETHAN UNVERZAGT and CARSON WHITTON. The women’s golf team was recognized by the Women’s Golf Association as earning the eighth highest GPA average among Division III teams, with a team GPA of 3.72. 2022–2023 Schedules: Men; Women
• Soccer: 2022–2023 Schedules: Men; Women A hearty Hawk ’em and congratulations to ERIN CEMBRALE ’23, a member of the U.S. Deaf Women’s National Soccer Team, who won the gold medal at the Deaflympics in Brazil in June!
• Softball: Huntingdon Softball player BAILEY MURPHY was named the 2021-22 NCAA Division III statistical champion for Toughest To Strike Out. Among all NCAA qualifiers (minimum two at bats per game played and appearances in at least 75 percent of team’s total games played), Bailey was one of three players to record no strikeouts during the 2022 season. Teammate NATALIE RITCHEY was in the top 10 in the category, with just one strikeout in 118 at-bats.
• Volleyball and Beach Volleyball: The Huntingdon beach and indoor volleyball teams were honored with the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021–2022 academic year. The award, initiated in the 1992–93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale. 2022 Indoor Schedule

• SAM HAVEL BLANQUISET ’14, athletic coordinator for the City of Foley, Ala., has been asked to develop an adaptive and inclusive recreation (therapeutic recreation) program for the city. The project launch is Summer 2023, at about the same time she will complete her master’s degree in human sport performance and physical education from the University of West Florida.
• JASON BOBO ’05 works as a system counsel for the University of Alabama system.
• LYNSIE BOELSCHE ’16 works as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst for the Jacksonville (Fla.) School for Autism.
• DYLAN BOHLING ’22 is the new assistant basketball coach and director of basketball operations for Reinhardt University. He is also working toward his graduate degree.
• JAMES BOWES ’15 and his wife, Molly, live in Leonardtown, Md., where he is a financial analyst with NAVAIR. The couple welcomed a son, James Matthew Bowes III, May 10, 2022.
• KATY GARREN BRASFIELD ’16 serves as director of community engagement for the Town of Pike Road, Ala.
• MATT BRINK ’12 married Ellen DeFleron in December 2021 and has opened Brink Rehab, a physical therapy clinic in Dothan, Ala.

• JAMES CONELY, adjunct faculty and College organist, served as guest organist for services at Dauphin Way UMC in Mobile this summer. The Lorenz Company has issued four books reprinting organ music by various composers, including four of Dr. Conely’s pieces.
• PAIGE CRUMBLEY ’14, research services and interlibrary loan librarian at Huntingdon, served as convention chair for the Alabama Library Association for 2022.
• SETH CURRIE ’13 serves as head baseball coach for Pensacola Catholic HS in Pensacola, Fla.
• CAROLINE DENT, a member of Huntingdon’s first class of MAT students to graduate next year, was awarded the Alabama Athletic Trainers’ Association (ALATA) graduate student scholarship during the state conference held in Birmingham this summer.
• JESSICA DAILEY ’18 works as an orthopaedic technician with Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons in Montgomery.
• WILL ’14 and KAYLA CAUSBY DAKE ’15 and their son, Baker, have moved to Opelika, Ala., where Will accepted a position as English teacher and football coach for Beauregard High School.
• KELSIE DARDON ’18 earned her Master of Science in human services in 2020 and completed licensure as a Certified Behavior Analyst earlier this year. She works for Summit Autism Center in Georgia.
• LAURA SANDERS DAVIS ’03 and her husband, Claude, welcomed a son, Tyson Lamar, June 17, 2022.
• ZACK DAVIS ’14 is moving to Charleston, S.C., for a new job as a category manager in plant services for Ingevity.

• OLIVIA DEN BESTEN ’19 is a student naval aviator with the U.S. Navy. She completed primary flight school in July 2021 in Pensacola and has moved on to advanced jet training flying the T-45C in Meridian, Miss.
• ZACH DEN BESTEN ’17 and his wife, Lindsay, welcomed a son, Kacey Andre, June 8, 2022.
• PAIGE DESMOND ’19 has returned to Robertsdale HS, her high school alma mater, as a paraprofessional in the Protect Reach classroom.
• Chief DARIUS AVERY DIXON ’15 and wife, Melissa (Wallace) Dixon, welcomed their first child, a son, July 5, 2022.
• RACHEL DUNLAY ’16 earned her master’s degree in mental health counseling from Nova Southeastern University and completed a graduate internship counseling victims of crime in Palm Beach County. She then completed internships as a psychotherapist at two private practices to earn her state mental health license in 2021. In September 2021 she moved to Gulf Breeze, Fla., where she practices as a therapist.
• CAROLINE COOPER DUNN ’18 and her husband, Josh, have moved back to Montgomery. Caroline completed her doctorate in pharmacy in 2022 at Harrison School of Pharmacy, Auburn University, and works as a pharmacist with Turenne PharMedCo.
• CHRISTOPHER ELLISON ’16 and his wife, Madison, have moved to Hoover, Ala. He is a pharmacist with Winn Dixie.
• EMILY FEDONCZAK ’19 completed her Juris Doctorate at the University of Alabama School of Law earlier this spring. Following completion of the bar exam she will begin working in-house as an associate claims counsel for a major title insurance company in Florida.
• COLE FOSTER ’21 is a deputy sheriff with Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in Milton, Fla.
• TATE FOWLER ’14 and his wife, DeLancey, welcomed a daughter, Charlee Rae, May 26, 2022.
• RON FULLOVE ’12 serves as director of sports medicine for Stillman College in Alabama. He earned a Master of Science in exercise physiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Dec. 2021.
• J GARDINER ’15 completed his doctoral degree in counseling psychology and school psychology from Florida State University in July 2022. Beginning in August, he will work for the South Georgia Autism Center as a postdoctoral fellow while studying for licensure.
• WALKER GARRETT ’07 was re-elected to a second term on the Columbus, Ga., City Council in 2020 (the term expires in 2024). He was elevated to equity partner and managing partner over Columbus and Macon, Ga., with Morgan & Morgan, the largest personal injury firm in the country.

• ALICIA GAUKER ’16, who recently completed a Master of Business Administration degree, has been promoted to associate director of LifeWorks Training and Development.

During this past season, one of the Robotics teams made it to the VEX World Championships in Dallas, winning the Inspire Award in the Engineering Division.

• KATY PASS ’22 was among the headliners starring in Millbrook Community Theater’s production of “Bye Bye Birdie” during summer 2022.
• ALEAH PAYNE ’12 serves on the Opelika community baseball rec board and basketball rec board. Aleah says she love getting youth “involved in sports early to teach the love of the game as well as God’s love for them as His children.”
• A hearty “Hawk’em!” and congratulations to Dr. KATHLEEN PENNEY ’15, director of external relations, who successfully defended her doctoral dissertation and completed her Ed.D. through the University of Alabama in July.

• AMBER SHIRLEY ’20, a student at DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, was selected to represent the school at the American Osteopathic Association’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Day on the Hill in Washington, D.C., advocating for healthcare policy.
• CARLEE GARDNER SIMS ’15 works as deputy finance director for the City of Prattville.
• The Rev. Dr. BRIAN SMITH ’94, a former chaplain at Huntingdon College, completed his Doctor of Ministry and Apologetics degree from Liberty University in June 2022.
• TANNOR SMOOT ’20 works with El Paso Locomotive in El Paso, Texas.
• GLENN STEARNS ’75, a manufacturing planning and inventory administrator with Hager Companies, completed a Ph.D. through the Washington Center for Management and Leadership, July 2021.
• SHANE STEFFEY ’22 works in commercial roofing sales for Peach State Roofing in Atlanta.
• KIMBERLY STEPHENSON, assistant professor of elementary education and accreditation support specialist, was awarded a Dissertation Mini-Grant from the Mensa Education and Research Foundation.

• DINO ’12 and CHEYENNE YOUNG TAMPARY ’14 have moved to Gulf Shores, Ala.
• JOSH ’13 and KAYCE ESTES THOMAS ’14 welcomed a daughter, Remington Eloise, June 8, 2022.
• HANNAH JOHNSON THOMPSON ’18 serves as director of student engagement for the Collat School of Business Career Center at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
• VICTORIA PARRISH TOLLEY ’18 married Joshua Tolley, May 14, 2022, and will soon graduate with a Master of Special Education degree from the University of South Alabama. She serves as an itinerant music teacher for Mobile County Public School System.
• CLAIRE TOMBERLIN ’21 has moved to Birmingham, Ala., and has begun law school at Cumberland School of Law. In her first year she was named a finalist for the Parham H. Williams Trial Competition and a 2022–2023 Cumberland School of Law Ambassador. (Claire says she will always be a Hawk Ambassador.)
• KOBY ’21 and SHEA GEORGE TOWNSEND ’21 were married June 18, 2022. In January 2022 Koby became City Clerk for the City of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. Shea will begin teaching science at Samson HS this fall.
• AARON TRIPLETT ’17, a teacher and coach for Boaz City Schools, led the Boaz HS men’s tennis team to the 2022 4A-5A State Tournament, finishing 8^th after a 10-1 record on the season. This was the team’s first appearance in the tournament since 2014. Aaron is simultaneously working on his master’s degree in history at Jacksonville State University.
• COLTON TWIGGS ’20 and his wife, Anna Leigh, welcomed a son, Oliver Lee, May 24, 2022.
• ALEX VAINSTEIN ’20 owns an independent Christmas card business and applies wisdom in service through volunteer work for the Montgomery Zoo and for his church.
• ANNA VAUGHN ’22 has joined the staff in the Office of Student Development as residence director for Ligon Hall and coordinator of Panhellenic activities.
• CHRISTINA VRANICH ’04 married Winston Miller, June 25, 2022.
• DUSTIN ’17 and BROOKE MEADOWS WATSON ’16 welcomed a son, Stetson Cooper, July 14, 2022.
• JORGI SIMS WEIDE ’16 works as a physical therapy assistant and lives in Calera, Ala.
• CHRISTINA ARNETTE WHATLEY ’20 is a retirement counselor with the Retirement Systems of Alabama.
• JEREMY WHITE ’10 serves as a registered nurse in the Hearth Cath Lab at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Ala. He and his wife, Jessica, have a 2-year-old daughter, Nealie. He writes, “Attending Huntingdon College was the best time of my life and I will always cherish my memories there.”
• QUEN WHITLOW ’19 married Jhona Wood, August 6, 2022.
• BREANNA GIORDANA WIERSMA ’12 and her husband, Mark, welcomed a son, Nico Karsten, June 9, 2022.
• JONATHAN WILLIAMS ’15 is a pharmacist with CVS. He and his wife, Morgan, welcomed son Thomas Glynn in January 2022. Thomas is the grandson of REBECCA HUGHES WILLIAMS ’76.
• RYAN ’16 and KATI PERDUE WILLIAMS ’16 welcomed a daughter, Eleanor Faye, June 1, 2022.
• CARLY WILLIAMSON ’14 works as a medical advisor for the U.S. Army.
• EMILY MINOR WINGARD ’15 and her husband, Mac, welcomed daughter Ivy, May 12, 2022. Emily is a teacher with Prattville Christian Academy.
• ANNA DEMEDICIS WRIGHT ’16, who previously earned a Master of Science in Health Administration and became licensed as a nursing home administrator in Mississippi, completed licensure in Alabama in 2022. She serves as nursing home administrator for North Mississippi Health Services-Marion Regional Nursing Home.
• ALLEE WURTZ ’18 is an Alfa Insurance agent in Deatsville, Ala.
• TYLER YOUNG ’11 and his wife, Heather, welcomed a son, Beau Elias, May 31, 2022.

Prayers and Sympathy

• Gail Burdick Derbin ’58 passed away in May 2022 in Tucson, Ariz. We extend condolences to her family, including her sister, June Burdick Bisard ’56.
• Our thoughts and prayers are with Madame Camille Elebash-Hill, professor emerita of French, on the death of her husband, Inge Hill, August 7, 2022.
• Cecile (Ceci) Gay Gray ’72, former Huntingdon professor of English, died July 6, 2022, in Montgomery. Ceci also taught for the Ohio State University and served as campus minister for UCLA’s University Catholic Center during her professional career. She was 71.
• Hays McKay Jr. passed away July 16, 2022. Dr. McKay was a distinguished pastor in the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church and grew Covenant United Methodist Church into one of the largest congregations in the Conference. He was a great supporter of the College and steered many students to Huntingdon from his church. We extend our condolences to his family and friends.
• The Huntingdon family surrounds Jayden Quire ’23 with love in the loss of her mother last week.
• The Huntingdon family was deeply saddened to learn the news of the death of Trey Pike’09, athletic director and football coach at Vernon High School, who was killed in a boating accident August 6 in Panama City, Fla.
• Sarah Gilreath Thompson ’61 died June 7, 2022, in Shorter, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew D. Thompson’61.
• The Alumni Office was saddened to learn the loss of Alice Thomason Walkup ’39, who died May 30, 2022, at the young age of 104.  At the time of her death, we believe that she was the second-oldest living alumna of the College, only surpassed in age by Elizabeth Cox Hassell of the Class of 1935.  We give thanks for Alice’s life of longevity and the many years of loyal and faithful support she extended to Huntingdon.  We offer our prayers and condolences to her family.
