Huntingdon Student Development Introduces a Glee Club

Montgomery, Ala.— PresLee Pittman ’24 has a passion. From her earliest years, she has loved singing and dancing—so much so she taught herself how to play guitar and piano, drawing also on the talents of her mother, who studied music in college. PresLee’s high school in Billingsley, Ala., where her father served as principal, was too small to field a glee club, so she continued her pursuit of that dream in college. Now, this psychology major and religion minor has made her own dream come true: she’s captaining a new Glee Club at Huntingdon College, with the blessing of the Office of Student Development.

“We have dancers, singers, instrumentalists, harmonizers … several students play piano and sing or play guitar and sing. I’m really excited,” says PresLee. Formed during the fall semester, practices began as soon as spring semester classes started.

“Music has been a really big part of my entire life,” says PresLee, who sang her way into the First Runner-up title for Miss Huntingdon 2022 and Second Runner-up the year prior. This semester, that statement will be truer than ever as she oversees multiple practices for dance, instrumentals, and vocals. Thirteen students have signed up so far, and she welcomes new interest at any time. She’s starting slow, learning just two songs, with students involved in separate practices based on their contribution to the group. PresLee makes up the harmonies herself, having done so singing along to the radio as she grew up.

Many Huntingdon yearbooks of the past include photos of former Huntingdon Glee Clubs, but there has not been such a club in at least the past three decades—replaced, instead, with a Concert Choir. Although the pandemic silenced voices across campus in multiple ways, the Concert Choir is rebuilding once again, but this time that organization has a sister.

PresLee envisions a Glee Club Showcase toward the end of the semester, but for now she’s reveling in the making of music, surrounded by new friends and fellow music-lovers.
