Small Group Food Scarcity Donation Drive Surpasses Expectations
Montgomery, AL – Kalee Russell ‘27, Kate Dinkel ‘27, Allie Roberts ‘27, and Nakaiya Stinson ‘26 hosted a Summer Food Scarcity Donation Drive from April 7-10 in the foyer of Julia Russell Dining Hall, collecting individual pre-packaged snacks in collaboration with the Heart of Alabama Food Bank. The donation drive was a project for their Huntingdon College Small Group Communication class.
The initiative aimed to provide essential snacks for children at risk of food scarcity during the summer, when school meal programs are unavailable. By partnering with the Heart of Alabama Food Bank, the drive sought to ensure local children in the River Region have access to nutritious options, helping to prevent hunger and support their well-being during the summer break.
Candace Carnegie ‘21, Huntingdon alumna and the Digital Media Specialist at the Heart of Alabama Food Bank expressed her appreciation for the project, “Thank you all so much for considering the Heart of Alabama Food Bank for your class project. I and the organization are truly thankful and grateful to have been a part of the activity. We couldn’t do what we do without amazing from groups like yours!”
In Alabama, 1 in 6 people face hunger, 1 in 4 children experience hunger, and in total, 256,000 individuals are struggling with hunger (HAFB.org).
In total, the group received 651 individually wrapped snacks/drinks during the drive.
The students of the Small Group Communication class, taught by Professor Elizabeth Rogers, look forward to continuing to partner with the Heart of Alabama Food Bank for campus-led donation drives and community service opportunities in the future.
