A Day in the Life of a Huntingdon Hawk: Jahunna Holmes ’26

Montgomery, AL – Jahunna (Jayy) Holmes is a junior English with Secondary Education in English Language Arts major from Auburn, Alabama. Jayy is an Assistant Residence Director for Ligon Residence Hall and a member of the Kingswood Initiative Campus Activities Board. As she was preparing for final exams and managing her residence hall, she was also working with her Kingswood team to put on the SGA Inaugural Ball. Jayy took HC News through a few days in her life; Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24.

“On Wednesday, I woke up and took some time to get ready for the day. Before my 8 a.m. class, I completed my walk-through of the residence hall to say hello to everyone and do a general building and cleanliness check before our wonderful housekeeping staff arrived to take care of the general upkeep. I am the Assistant RD for Ligon Hall, where mainly new Huntingdon women live their first year.

After my walk-through, I walked to Flowers Hall for my 8:00 a.m. class, Seminar in English Studies with Dr. Parker.  I gave my presentation on the roles of wives in the plays Arden of Faversham and A Yorkshire Tragedy.  After that, I had my 9:30 a.m. class, Children and Young Adult Literature with Dr. Chandler. During that class time, we worked on our final group project that will discuss the importance of the books we’ve read over the semester and how those books affect young adult literature.

After my morning classes, I walked to Jackson Home to pack the decorations needed for the SGA Inaugural Ball tomorrow night.  Today we are taking all the items over to the Montgomery Country Club to begin assembling and decorating. This year’s theme is “Year of the Hawk” and has decor is inspired by the Chinese New Year. For decorations, we decided to go with a traditional color scheme of red and gold. This is our last Kingswood event of the year. The night honors the old and new SGA officers at a dinner, then the entire school is invited to the ball.

After arriving at the club, I met the event planner, Ms. Leslie. We did a final walk through of the layout, décor, linens, and menu. After that, the Kingswood team and I unloaded the decorations and began to sort, assemble, and run any last-minute errands.

At 12:45 p.m. I took a break to meet with my classmates to go over our presentation for our 1:30 p.m. class, Reading in the Content Area with Dr. Zimbelman. In class, we competed in the “Battle of the Books” which is a reading contest we did over the semester. We were given 39 books to split amongst each other in our group. Each person on the team was responsible for reading and reporting on their books. Today, we competed with our classmates in other teams to see who knew the text the best. Our team won!

After that class I ran to my 3:00 communications class to watch presentations.  When that was over, I went back to the club for a few hours to finish any projects before going home to Ligon to prepare for Thursday.

On Thursday, I started out with my usual routine of getting ready and completing a walk-through of the building. After checking that off my list, I walked to the club to continue set up. At the club I did a final walkthrough with Ms. Leslie and helped with decorations before I had to leave for my 11:00 class.

My one class today was an education class with Dr. Martin and the best cohort of students at Huntingdon! Today we had presentations on private education vs. public education and technology in the classroom.

After class, I went to the Seay Twins Art Gallery for my Sigma Tau Delta honor society induction. (Congratulations to all my fellow inductees!) Sigma Tau Delta is the honor society for excellence in English. After the induction and pictures, I went back to the club to finish last minute details then returned to the residence hall to get ready for the ball.

At 6:00, the team met at the club to set out the place cards for the dinner.  After that, we went upstairs to the ballroom for a final walk through and a group picture of the Kingswood team. At 7:30, the party started!

Many people think that Kingswood is just campus activities, but I believe we are truly the heartbeat of the student body. Our job is to ensure that the students have something to do and always feel welcomed and loved. We take pride in making sure the student body feels appreciated!

This year. I have had the honor of leading 13 individuals on our Kingswood team, prepping them so that they will be a leader in the next year or two. Kingswood is not just about campus activities, but it is also about our connections with each other and the student body. So, thank you to my Kingswood team for allowing me to lead and be part of this program.”
