Huntingdon Invites Alabama Schools to be Character Partners

Montgomery, AL – On Tuesday, Huntingdon President Anthony Leigh extended an invitation to all Alabama elementary, middle and secondary schools to be a Partner in Character School. The initiative is part of the Huntingdon Presidents’ Character Initiative launched by President Leigh and Huntingdon SGA President DeJon Gibby II to celebrate lives of character and encourage students to be mindful of how their actions define their character.

“One of the highest values we can instill in our students is to be a person of character,” stated President Leigh. “The educational experience gives a student opportunities throughout every day to demonstrate character in the classroom, in their extracurricular activities, in their interactions with people in their school community, and in their use of online platforms.  Lives of character should not only be encouraged, but we should also be intentional in celebrating individuals who model good character.”

To be a Partner in Character School, schools commit to adopt the five-point Huntingdon College Character Compact and provide an opportunity for their students to pledge to live into the ideals of the compact. President Leigh has produced a Character Compact appropriate for students in grades 6-12 and a separate one conducive for students in grades K-5.  The Character Compacts are available on the Huntingdon website. This tool is designed to give school officials, teachers, and coaches a simple way to communicate character expectations to their students.

School administrators in Partner in Character Schools also commit to celebrate students of character, actions of integrity, and demonstrations of good sportsmanship in meaningful and appropriate ways in their school community. Last Spring, President Leigh awarded ten Huntingdon senior students the inaugural President’s Character Award in recognition of their four-year example of exemplary character.

To be recognized as a Huntingdon College Partner in Character School, school administrators are invited to indicate their participation by completing the online form. For more information about the Presidents’ Character Initiative, please contact officeofthepresident@hawks.huntingdon.edu.
