Huntingdon Celebrates Service
Montgomery, AL – The Huntingdon Motto, engraved over the front door of Flowers Hall, has been the calling to students since 1909 to “enter to grow in wisdom; go forth to apply wisdom in service.” To some, the motto might seem to suggest that the application of wisdom comes after graduation, however, the complete motto is applicable at all times and could be viewed as a never-ending loop where wisdom applies to service and service grows wisdom.
For Huntingdon students, the acts of service and growth expand beyond the walls of the classroom into every facet of campus life. No matter the academic major, cohort, or team, service is celebrated as part of the campus culture for a Hawk. Many of the faculty and staff see the opportunities of service as a larger classroom for expanding students’ experiences and understanding of the world around them. Huntingdon Head Softball Coach Casey Chrietzberg is one of the many administrators on campus to prioritize the motto. She commented, “We find joy in community service because it connects us to something greater than ourselves. It connects us with different people, organizations, and events in our city and allows us to serve in ways we may have never been able to before.”
To honor President Anthony Leigh’s declaration of “The Year of Celebration” at Huntingdon College, below are a few of the campus organizations and events that have celebrated service at the start of the school semester:
Huntingdon Softball schedules a monthly project to serve and bond. The team started off the semester with a trip to Halcyon Elementary School to assist the teachers with various projects in the classrooms. This month, the ladies visited Oak Grove Inn, an assisted living senior home, to share a day of activities and fun for the residents, including a game of balloon softball.
The Women’s Wrestling team has continued their commitment to River Region charities with their semester events. The group volunteered in August at the annual Montgomery Hog Days BBQ Festival. The event of music and food is a community fundraiser supporting several local non-profits. In September, the team volunteered their time and athletic abilities to Dream Court, a local program that offers adaptive tennis opportunities to adults and children.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis also took to the courts as volunteers at the Montgomery Blue/Gray Kids Day Tennis Clinic and Carnival. They hosted carnival games and gave lessons on the court as guest instructors.
The Huntingdon Greek organizations have a history of service and are pleased to feature their work in The Year of Celebration. This fall, several chapters have already hosted fundraisers to support their national philanthropies including the Alpha Omicron Pi’s basket give-a-way supporting the Arthritis Foundation, Chi Omega’s second annual Color Run raising money for Make-A-Wish, and Phi Mu’s lemonade stand supporting Children’s Miracle Network
The men of Kappa Alpha Psi have been reading to classrooms and supporting teachers in elementary schools and washing school buses while the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter offered Huntingdon campus wide education and support opportunities around the topic of mental health.

The Huntingdon chapter of Circle K has continued to have a heavy presence on campus with projects and opportunities open to the student body. The group stepped in to assist the Huntingdon College Archives and the Alabama West Florida UMC Archives with projects and featured displays. They have also hosted a Huntingdon “Acts of Service Day” aimed at small cleaning and beautification projects around campus.
As the semester is only at the half-way point, academic departments and organizations will have many more opportunities for the Huntingdon family to share in celebrating service.
