Religion Program

Department of Humanities

Huntingdon College's Religion Program provides a critical perspective on the enduring values and standards of all cultures in order to prepare students for living, thinking, and working responsibly in a diverse world. As a student in the religion program, you will be challenged to study how cultures around the world have derived the ultimate meaning of religion. Students in this program receive excellent preparation for further study in graduate or professional school or seminary. Whether you choose to complete the religion major or the religion major with a ministries concentration, you will be enriched by the understanding and interaction this program will provide.

What makes Huntingdon College's Religion program unique?

Huntingdon College is a college of the United Methodist Church. This means that all the higher education resources of the United Methodist Church are at the student's disposal. Religion is not only an area of study, it is active participation in life experiences, such as campus ministries, mission work, leading worship, and building a community of faith.

Religion Internships

A wide variety of internships are available to religion majors, especially religion majors with a concentration in ministry. Area churches hire Huntingdon College students to assist with youth, children, and adult ministries.

Ministerial/Theological Study

Students contemplating theological study may choose any field for their major work and are encouraged to undertake a broad cultural preparation, choosing courses that will help them develop communication skills, an understanding of human nature and values, and creative thinking. They should consider the following subjects: language and literature; history, non-Western cultures as well as European; natural science; psychology; the fine arts; religious studies and philosophy. Huntingdon College, in cooperation with the United Methodist Church, offers tuition assistance to Methodist students who are preparing for careers in ministry. Information on these opportunities may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid. Students interested in pursuing a career in Christian Education (Youth or Children's Ministries) may choose virtually any field for their major work. Any major earned from a liberal arts college will adequately prepare them for further study in a seminary. Students interested in seminary should consult with the Ministerial Advisor, Dr. Frank W. Buckner.
