Biology and Cell Biology are vigorous and growing programs at Huntingdon, where students study far beyond the textbook.  You will join a community of scholars who work with DNA in the lab, scrounge through swamps for salamanders, and talk about the workings of the immune system over lunch with professors.  The Huntingdon faculty will challenge you to live out your learning experiences through:

  • Lab research that begins your first semester
  • Field research at several ecological sites near Montgomery, including the College-owned Bowman Ecological Center
  • Marine Science research at Dauphin Island Sea Lab
  • Travel/study with faculty during your junior or senior year, including specialized biological research in selected locations around the world
  • Internships with the FBI, hospitals, primate labs, research internships, and veterinary clinics, among other placements
  • On-campus science-based clubs and the Beta Beta Beta biological honor society
  • Qualifying students may deepen their studies in Huntingdon’s Hobbs Honors Program.

Facilities

Huntingdon’s science laboratories and classrooms are housed in the historic Bellingrath Hall, which was renovated and expanded in 2008 and features spacious labs filled with light and advanced instrumentation. Field research can be completed in Alabama’s natural habitats and may offer glimpses of a number of rare and endangered species.  The College’s Bowman Ecological Center, membership in the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium, and frequent “road trips” and travel/study experiences—including a faculty-led program in Costa Rica—are part of the Huntingdon science programs.

Our alumni include teachers, environmental scientists, researchers, health professionals, veterinarians, and wildlife biologists. Recent graduates are succeeding in some of the best graduate programs in the country for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, chiropractic, optometry, physician’s assistant, cell and molecular biology, and law, among other professions.  Placement rates far exceed national averages.
